DEALING WITH EVASIVE REFERENCES
Referencing is imperative to the hiring process. A look into behavior on the job is key element to making the right decision in your selection process. Try not to be comforted by the pat answer "they are eligible for rehire".
In today's litigious world employers are typically less than willing to discuss a person's performance on the job however if the relationship was a good one with the former employer or co worker they will be willing to discuss that person with you and often "off the record".
Leave a message for the contact if they are not available…Identify yourself and let the contact know that your candidate suggested you give them a call to discuss their work performance and personality. Tell them your candidate appreciates their cooperation of a response as they are being considered for employment with your company.
With that request…..think twice if the contact does not respond to your call.
