What is the point you are trying to make? (What is your purpose in submitting this letter to the company?) Get that information in the first paragraph of the letter. Remember to be specific and make it interesting!
Examples: “I’m interested in pursuing a career as a customer service representative with ABC Company.” “Ms. Jane Smith suggested that I contact you regarding possible position openings.” “The administrative position advertised in the Foster’s Daily Democrat on Sunday sounds like the perfect job for me!"
What are your qualifications, skills and accomplishments? Be sure to also list any training, experience or technical skills that would apply to the position in which you are interested.
Examples: “Excellent customer service abilities resulted in measurable increases in client satisfaction.” “Received promotions due to consistently high productivity and excellent quality of administrative support work.”
Can you offer the potential employer any unique skills or special attributes that may be useful in the job or for the company?
Examples: “Proven track record in attracting, retaining and developing a strong client base resulting in exceeding sales quotas by 10% for six consecutive months.” “Knowledge of contracts and legal requirements for working with government vendors.” “Three years of experience in writing and editing employee newsletters.”
How will you demonstrate your abilities to the company?
Examples: “My experience in training new hires and acting as a primary contact person for employees can assist during your company’s current growth phase.” “I can immediately contribute my experience in emergency room triage and admissions to assist the department in reaching its patient service goals.” “My ability to diffuse angry customers while a solution is determined for their problem will help increase client satisfaction.”
What results do you want from your letter?
Examples: “I would like to meet with you personally to further demonstrate my enthusiasm and interest in the position.” “I wish to speak to you in detail about the requirements of the position and how I can contribute.” “I will call you to follow up on my resume submission and to find out if a personal meeting would be appropriate at this time.”
