THANK YOU LETTERS SAY A LOT ABOUT YOU --
One of the easiest ways to make sure your interviewer remembers you is to send out a brief, but specific "Thank You" note immediately after your meeting with them. At McIntosh Staffing, we have interviewed over 13,000 applicants since 1987 and only a few hundred people have ever sent a "thank you" note. You'd better believe we remember those few hundred! We keep a book in our office waiting room with all of those notes in it.
An easy way to remember to send the note is to keep note cards and stamped envelopes with you to fill out and drop in the mail the same day as your interview. (Always make sure your thank you note is in the mail within 24 hours after the interview.)
Handwritten notes and cards are perfect. If your handwriting isn't your favorite skill, you may also use computer generated letters with your original signature. Emails are also okay if you are short on time, but a handwritten note really makes the most favorable impact.
Touch on specific job related items that you went over with the interviewer during your conversation and use those to remind them of how your strengths and skills match the position. Be enthusiastic! For example:
"After discussing the marketing project with you, I was very excited about the possibilities. In fact, my mind has been working overtime and I have some additional ideas that I hope to discuss with you soon."
"Thank you for your detailed description of job duties and goals for the administrative assistant position. I was greatly interested to learn that you want your assistant to interface extensively with other departments. I really enjoy taking on that type of responsibility! In past positions, my employers noted that I was able to generate cooperation among department teams and contributed greatly to the company's success. I am looking forward to doing the same for you."
Hopefully, you established a rapport with your interviewer. You can add a personal touch to your note by mentioning something you have in common, for instance --
"It was enjoyable speaking to you about golfing and I look forward to seeing you out on the golf course!"
"I enjoyed learning that you share my attachment to dogs, particularly Pugs!"
At the end, don't forget to thank them for taking the time to meet with you and let them know you would really like to do the job for them!
