Preparation is the Advantage

 HOW EMPLOYERS RATE CANDIDATE POTENTIAL
When you see the perfect job, will your attitude and ability to demonstrate competency enable you to compete with other job applicants? Sure you look good on paper, but can you explain the details that make you a better employee than someone else? Here are some areas that hiring managers have rated as “highly desirable” when evaluating job applicants.

Strong academic background – regardless of what level of education you have achieved, academic excellence is highly regarded by employers. A few bad grades here and there can be explained, but there is no excuse for a poor overall record. Please note that most companies will verify your academic credentials with the schools you attended.

Accomplishments – founding school clubs, participating in various community and professional organizations, coaching team sports, teaching classes at the local community college, volunteering for difficult projects at work, coming up with innovative suggestions to save money or make money for employers -- these are all significant accomplishments that demonstrate how you contribute to the community or to the company. Be sure they are evenly balanced and emphasize the work related accomplishments in your interviews more than anything else.

Preparation – A candidate who has researched the industry, company, its executives and even the interviewer with whom they are meeting will get high marks and set themselves apart. Go to www.vault.com for profiles of various companies and use www.bls.gov for industry and job profiles. Also, make sure to thoroughly review the company’s own web site for key information that you can use to your advantage. Find out about the market they are in, who their competitors are and where they stand in relation to others in their industry. Knowing why you want to work for the particular company and knowing what skills or qualifications you can contribute in the specific job for which you are interviewing is a sure way to impress interviewers!

Questions – if you have researched the company and the industry, you should be able to ask some excellent and interesting questions. Applicants who don’t ask questions are usually put at the bottom of the consideration pile. Listen carefully for cues from the interviewer and ask for further details about some of the topics you have discussed. For example, you can ask the interviewer to expand on the job responsibilities or find out the names and positions of key people in the organization you will deal with on a regular basis. Ask for further clarification of some of their web site information, such as how newly launched products have affected their company and what goals the company is working on for the coming year. You can even contribute ideas or suggestions based on the job description, if it seems appropriate for the position.

Enthusiasm – Average employees are looking for a job, extraordinary employees are looking for ways to offer their skills and abilities while expanding their achievements in a given industry. When an applicant shows enthusiasm for the job and for the company where they are interviewing, they will make a lasting impression. Don’t fake enthusiasm for the job if you don’t feel it because most interviewers will see right through it and view you as insincere. Maintain professionalism regardless of how you feel about the interviewer or the job, but be honest with them, and with yourself, as to whether or not the position will satisfy your career goals.

These are just a few of the ways you can set yourself apart when interviewing for positions. Don’t forget to tell interviewer you want the position if you know it is for you! Always ask for the job, then ask what the next step in the hiring process will be. Try to get a time frame regarding when you can expect to hear from them.
