Q: How important is a thank you note following my interview? J. Carrigan, Portsmouth, NH
A: It doesn’t matter whether you have interviewed for a Chief Financial Officer or a Retail Clerk, writing a thank you note following your interview sends an influential message to the individual/s you met with. In essence, a thank you note gives you a second chance to make a good impression. Its shows the interviewer you care about the impression you made and will care about the impression you make with your work and when representing their organization. For most, I recommend an email for three reasons. 1. You can ensure it gets delivered without delay 2. The process is easier and faster than traditional snail mail 3. It’s the more progressive way to communicate. Be sure to send an email to each person you meet with. Never ask to have it forwarded. If you didn’t catch the name it’s completely acceptable to call their receptionist for the contact information. Timing can be everything so it’s important to stay fresh in the employers mind. It’s best to send out the thank you within 24 hours following your meeting. Not only are you wondering if you’ll get the job but the interviewer is also curious to know if you are interested. Proofread your letter thoroughly. Consider the formality of the interview you had and the personality of the company when choosing your subject line and the tone of the letter. Begin your subject line with… 1. Thank you for your time 2. It was a pleasure meeting you 3. Following up Lastly, let the potential employer know if you want the position. Keep it short and sweet but review the notions of the company and how they parallel your values. Express your desire for the position and why you feel you would be a great fit. Lastly thank them for their time and that you hope to be the chosen candidate. As simple as that, a thank you note can be the home run you need to win the game. What may be of interest to you is that only 2% of all interviews we conduct in our office result in a thank you note. Believe me when I say a thank you note makes a very positive impression on us.
